History
Benzyl-alcohol-preserved water has long been a standard laboratory and pharmacy diluent. The 0.9% concentration is the conventional bacteriostatic level: enough to suppress bacterial growth in a multi-draw vial while remaining a simple, well-characterized solution.
Bacteriostatic water vs. sterile water
Both are sterile, but they are not interchangeable. Sterile water has no preservative, so once a vial is opened it is treated as single-use. Bacteriostatic water carries 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth and lets the same vial be drawn from more than once. For a lab working through many small preparations, that is the practical difference: fewer vials opened, less waste.
Because of the benzyl alcohol, bacteriostatic water is not the right diluent for every application. Check the requirements of your protocol or assay before substituting one for the other.
Choosing a size: 3ml, 10ml or 30ml
The 3ml vial suits small, separate preparations where a vial is used up quickly. The 10ml vial is the general-purpose size most buyers stock. The 30ml vial is for high-volume bench programs that would otherwise open several 10ml vials.
